How I met Bill and became good friends

I first met Bill in September 1967 as he and I took our four year old daughters (Josephine and Sian) to Cae Top Elementary School in Upper Bangor (North Wales).  At that time it was customary at Cae Top that when the school morning bell rang the children would line up outside their classroom doors.  Our daughters wanted us to remain with them as long as possible before filing into the classroom, and insisted that Bill and I remain with them holding tightly to their hands.  This we did for the whole of the first term!  We were both lecturers at Bangor University - in English and Chemistry respectively, and despite the somewhat disparate disciplines we became firm friends as we talked together each morning in the school line.  Interestingly and amusingly we were both there until Christmas, by which time all other parents had long since given up this procedure!  Josephine and Sian are almost exactly the same age and they became best buddies and they spent much of their time together in school and in our homes drawing and colouring, and we enjoyed many happy visits with Bill and Jackie.
Bill was a gentle and compassionate person with a delightful sense of humour, and although our paths did not cross after we both left Bangor, Pat and I remember him and Jackie with great affection.  He will be missed.
